Sometimes constipation and straining to stool, coughing, or Valsalva's maneuvers
can cause part of the rectal lining to push out from the anal opening.
This condition is known as rectal prolapse and may lead to secretion of mucus
from the anus.
Please see
conventional, complementary, and alternative medical treatments
for important background information regarding the different types of medical treatments discussed on this page.
Naturopathic, Complementary, and Alternative treatments that may be considered include:
Etiology
Rectal prolapse can result from any form of increased intra-abdominal
pressure, such as:
Constipation and straining to stool.
Coughing.
Valsalva's maneuver or lifting heavy weights.
Diagnosis
Visual examination.
Differential Diagnosis
Hemorrhoids may be a co-morbid condition.
Treatment
Usually, eliminating the cause of the prolapse is the only treatment necessary.
Severe or chronic prolapse requires referral for surgery to strengthen and
tighten the anal sphincter muscle or to repair the prolapsed lining.
